Top Coffee Spots in Asheville (from a local)

Posted on September 19, 2024

As a coffee lover who has lived in Asheville for years, I’ve spent countless mornings and afternoons hopping from café to café, finding the best spots for that perfect cup.

Asheville’s coffee scene is as diverse as its arts and outdoors culture.

Whether you’re looking for a cozy nook to get some work done or a quick pick-me-up before a mountain hike, this list has you covered.

Here are my favorite places to grab coffee in Asheville:

1. High Five Coffee

Hi Five Coffee is serving delicious coffee at 13 Rankin Avenue in Asheville.
If you’re aching for an expresso or delicious cup or warm black coffee, Hi Five Coffee is my go-to in Downtown Asheville.

Location: (North Asheville) (and more)

This spot is an Asheville staple, serving up locally roasted Counter Culture Coffee. High Five’s cozy vibe makes it perfect for catching up with friends or just people-watching out the window. They do the classics really well, but if you’re feeling adventurous, try their brown sugar latte. It’s the best balance of sweet and strong.

Pro Tip: Their Merrimon Ave. location has plenty of parking—rare for Asheville! I also love the North Asheville river location for those slow weekend mornings that require coffee and a book by the river.

2. Trade and Lore

Location: (Downtown Asheville)

If you’re into aesthetics as much as your coffee, Trade and Lore is the place to be. With exposed brick walls and a chill, artsy vibe, this place feels like the epitome of Asheville’s creative spirit. Their coffee menu is always changing, featuring unique seasonal lattes like lavender or turmeric.

What I Love: The backyard patio is a hidden gem, perfect for sipping on a latte while enjoying some fresh air.

3. Liberty House Coffee and Café

Location: (Montford)

Tucked away in Montford, Liberty House is a quiet oasis with a beautiful backyard garden. This is my go-to when I want a slower, more peaceful morning. They serve coffee from local roasters Coastal Coffee, and their rotating menu keeps it fresh. Bonus: Their pastries are baked in-house and pair perfectly with their coffee.

My Recommendation: Grab their matcha latte if you’re in the mood for something different—it’s one of the best in town.

4. PennyCup Coffee Co.

Location: Multiple locations (including the (River Arts District)

For those who appreciate a good single-origin coffee, PennyCup is the spot. They roast their beans locally and offer pour-overs that showcase the unique flavors of each blend. The River Arts District location is a favorite of mine, especially if I’m planning on walking around and checking out the galleries after my caffeine fix.

Why Go?: It’s a little more low-key, perfect for grabbing a seat and getting some work done. Plus, they do a fantastic espresso tonic.

5. Odd’s Café

Location: (West Asheville)

West Asheville’s quirky vibe really shines through at Odd’s Café. This spot has a funky, laid-back atmosphere and some of the friendliest baristas around. Their coffee is always great, and they also offer kombucha on tap for those moments when I’m in the mood for something lighter.

Favorite Drink: Their iced cardamom latte is killer on a hot day—creamy, spicy, and refreshing.

6. Summit Coffee

Location: Asheville RAD (River Arts District)

Summit Coffee is the newest addition to the River Arts District scene, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. It’s perfect for anyone who wants a great cup of coffee before diving into an art-filled afternoon. Their cold brew is smooth and strong, and they offer a selection of house-made syrups that add just the right touch of flavor.
