Asheville is full of iconic spots like the Biltmore and the Blue Ridge Parkway, but if you’re looking for something a bit off the beaten path, this guide will highlight some hidden gems you might not have explored yet.
Having lived here for years, I’ve discovered a few lesser-known experiences that make Asheville special.
Here are seven unique things to do in Asheville that you might not have considered:
1. Dive into Asheville’s Comedy Scene
If you’re a fan of stand-up or improv, you’re in luck! Asheville may have a small comedy scene, but it’s packed with talent. On almost any given night, you’ll find an open mic or a stand-up show. LaZoom Room is a standout, known for its quirky comedy bus tours and local performances. For improv, check out shows at The Magnetic Theatre or LEAF Global Arts, where local performers bring hilarious and heartfelt energy. Some of my best nights in the city have been spent laughing with the local comedy crowd—definitely something you won’t want to miss!
2. Explore Hidden Ruins Along the Laurel River Trail
If you’re a fan of nature and history, the Laurel River Trail in Madison County is one of my favorite hikes. Just 45 minutes from Asheville, this trail offers scenic river views and a bit of adventure. After about 2-3 miles, you’ll come across graffiti-covered buildings—the remnants of Runion, an old logging town. Behind the graffiti, if you venture a little off-trail and up the ridge, you’ll stumble upon even more ruins, including old cars and remnants of the town’s past. It’s the perfect hike for those looking to explore Asheville’s hidden history in the great outdoors.
3. Catch a Movie at the Fine Arts Theatre
On a rainy day, few things are better than catching an indie film downtown at the Fine Arts Theatre. This small, cozy cinema showcases independent and foreign films in a laid-back, retro atmosphere. I’ve spent many rainy afternoons here, curled up with a bag of popcorn watching films you can’t find in the bigger theaters. It’s the perfect spot to slow down and take in some culture.
4. Go Garnet Hunting on Horseback
If you’re up for something a little different, Sandy Bottom Trail Rides in Madison County offers horseback tours that take you to an old garnet mine. It’s not far from Asheville, and the experience is magical—you’ll get to ride through beautiful scenery, hop off the horse, and explore a stream for garnets. It’s not a well-known activity, but it’s definitely a fun and relaxing way to spend a day outdoors.
5. Visit the WNC Nature Center
The WNC Nature Center is one of those places that often flies under the radar, but it’s a great spot for families, nature lovers, and anyone interested in learning more about local wildlife. Located just 10 minutes from downtown, the center focuses on the native flora and fauna of the Southern Appalachian region, and you can see everything from otters and wolves to owls and reptiles. It’s a great place to spend a few hours and reconnect with nature.
6. Hunt for Street Art in the River Arts District
While the River Arts District (RAD) is known for its galleries and artists, my favorite part of RAD is discovering the hidden street art around almost every corner. You’ll find murals by local artists, and some cool graffiti tucked away on buildings and old train cars. One of my favorite spots is the Foundation Walls, an outdoor graffiti gallery where the art constantly changes. It’s a unique way to experience Asheville’s artsy vibe without ever stepping into a gallery.
7. Relax at a Secret Speakeasy
While not exactly a hidden location, many visitors overlook Asheville’s speakeasies, which offer a special kind of local charm. Top of the Monk is my go-to for craft cocktails with a view. Tucked away in Pack’s Tavern, this speakeasy serves drinks with a twist—you even get a key that unlocks a small snack box when you order! For something more intimate, head to Ben’s Tune-Up for great sake and a lively, low-key atmosphere.
