60 Haywood Street Condo Guide

WH Lord designed the original Haverty store.  The exterior retains some of the original pink stucco and elaborate relief carvings in its gable apex. Other exterior panels display other mythical-like creatures giving it a dramatic flair. Records obtained from The Pack Library online site indicated that Roger McGuire and Associates, coupled with the architect, Jim Samsel, transformed this structure into condominiums. Mr. Samsel, the architect, joined Allen Roderick of Heartwood renovations and Building Inc., general contractor, to preserve the character of this historic building.

The 1-2 bedroom homes range anywhere from 932 square feet to 2400 square feet.  There are a couple of 3-bedroom units varying in size.  The condos are located in Downtown Asheville.

The private off-street parking lot includes a small garden. There is plenty of extra storage space in the basement.

Building Exclusivity

Each unit is unique with its own specific desirable features.  Some have enclosed patios or have a view of the Basilica.  Most have expansive windows with plenty of natural light and high ceilings, quality appliances, hardwood floors, and solid surfaces.  A few have custom cabinetry. All of them have a history of not staying on the market for long.

Building Location and Storage

This building was site built on a well-maintained state road with sidewalks and good lighting. Extra storage is available on-site in the basement.

Parking/Transportation

There is an off-street parking lot that provides residents with designated reserved spots.  There are parking garages and on-street parking for guests within walking distance. Asheville has a public transit system which is an additional mode of transportation.

Walkability

This building is across the street from the public library, adjacent to the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium (approximate 5 minutes), close to Pritchard Park, and around the corner from infamous Wall Street houses terrific shops and restaurants.

Culture and Arts

Because of its location in Downtown Asheville, Sixty Haywood Street Condominiums has immediate access to all the wonders, art, and culture the Asheville’s small city provides.  You can walk to Pritchard Park and listen to local musicians or, if so desired, participate in the frenzy of the drumming circle.  Take a little farther stroll, and you will find yourself at Pack Square that offers an array of musical and artistic events.

In the Press

Great insights about the building, development, and history.

Mountain Xpress, in an article by Michael Muller, posted May 25, 2010, commented on the “Asheville Miracle” and the revitalization of downtown in the nineties. The condominiums at 60 Haywood Street are part of that transformation. This conversion encouraged residents to move “back” into downtown.  Part of this fantastic renewal included renovating historic buildings, creating new restaurants, and updating Wall Street, which all contributed to Asheville’s eclectic charm and reputation today as a desirable “liveable city” that people worldwide flock to or visit.
