7 Scenic Day Trips from Asheville, NC: A Local’s Guide

Posted on September 20, 2024

As much as I love Asheville, sometimes you just need a change of scenery.

Luckily, there’s no shortage of stunning spots to explore just a short drive away.

Whether you’re looking for a mountain escape, waterfall adventures, or a charming small-town vibe, here are seven of my favorite day trips from Asheville.

1. Chimney Rock State Park

Distance: 45 minutes

Chimney Rock is an iconic spot just under an hour from Asheville. After climbing up the 500-step staircase (or taking the elevator!), you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. Hike the Hickory Nut Falls trail to see one of the tallest waterfalls in the state, or stroll along the riverwalk in the quaint village below the park.

Don’t Miss: Grabbing a bite at the Old Rock Café while taking in views of the Rocky Broad River.

2. Brevard and Waterfalls Galore

Distance: 50 minutes

Known as the “Land of Waterfalls,” Brevard is a perfect day trip for nature lovers. Check out the famous Looking Glass Falls or hike to Triple Falls and High Falls in DuPont State Forest. Brevard itself is a charming town with galleries, local shops, and great dining options.

Don’t Miss: Grabbing coffee at Quotations Coffee Café before heading out to the falls.

3. Hot Springs

Distance: 45 minutes

For a relaxing escape, head to Hot Springs, where you can soak in natural hot mineral waters right by the French Broad River. The town is small but packed with charm, surrounded by lush mountains and the Appalachian Trail. After your soak, you can hike a portion of the AT or have a meal at one of the local cafés.

Don’t Miss: A riverside soak at Hot Springs Resort & Spa—you’ll leave feeling refreshed.

4. Lake Lure

Distance: 45 minutes

Lake Lure is famous for its appearance in Dirty Dancing, but it’s also a great spot for a relaxing day trip. Take a boat tour of the lake, visit the sandy beach, or hike around nearby Chimney Rock State Park. It’s especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves are changing.

Don’t Miss: The scenic Flowering Bridge—a beautiful spot for photos and a peaceful walk.

5. Grandfather Mountain

Distance: 1.5 hours

If you’re looking for an adventure with jaw-dropping views, head to Grandfather Mountain. Walk across the famous Mile-High Swinging Bridge or hike one of the park’s rugged trails for panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The park also has a nature museum and animal habitats to explore.

Don’t Miss: The challenging Grandfather Trail—it’s tough, but the views are worth it.

6. The Biltmore Estate

Distance: 15 minutes

You don’t even need to leave Asheville for this one, but a day at The Biltmore feels like a getaway. Explore America’s largest home, stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens, and enjoy wine tasting at the estate’s winery. It’s a full-day adventure without the long drive.

Don’t Miss: The Conservatory—a perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon exploring rare plants.

7. The Blue Ridge Parkway

Distance: Varies

This one is more about the journey than the destination. Hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway for stunning views, winding roads, and overlooks. Stop at Craggy Gardens for a short hike with unbeatable views, or head to Mount Mitchell—the highest peak east of the Mississippi. The Parkway offers endless spots for picnics, hikes, and scenic stops.

Don’t Miss: Sunset at the Devil’s Courthouse overlook—bring your camera!

These are just a few of the amazing day trips you can take from Asheville. Whether you’re craving a waterfall hike, a soak in hot springs, or a quiet mountain drive, there’s something for everyone just a short distance away.
